NEW STRAITS TIMES: XOX To Launch Mobile Services by November

XOX Com Sdn Bhd, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), plans to launch its mobile services by November this year.
Yesterday, XOX signed an agreement with Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd, which enables it to offer prepaid and postpaid mobile services.under the 010 prefix.
An MVNO is a firm that provides mobile phone services without having its own infrastructure like base station towers and transmitters. It rides on existing mobile operators' infrastructure, but supplies its own Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards and handles its own billing.
XOX has committed to signing some 500,000 predominantly Chinese customers in the first three years of operations as a MVNO.
XOX will use Celcom's extensive network coverage to offer a broad range of mobile phone services that will be packaged and marketed under the XOX brand. These services, which include text messaging and even third generation (3G) mobile services, will be targeted at customers within the Chinese community, an area which XOX is strong in.
Celcom chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly said despite XOX not having any customers to speak of at the moment, XOX's edge is its strong sales and distribution network in the Chinese community.
"They (management of XOX) may be new in mobile but they have been in business for a very long time now, and are very experienced in sales and distribution," he said.
Shazalli said there would be no conflict of interest between XOX and Celcom's other MVNO, REDtone, despite it both serving the Chinese community because of Redtone's focus on the Chinese enterprise market and XOX's focus on retail customers.
Meanwhile, he said Celcom is still finalising an agreement with Tune Talk Sdn Bhd, which will enable it to ride on Celcom's infrastructure and start offering mobile services.
Last December, TuneTalk and Celcom signed a memorandum of understanding as the initial step to making it an MVNO. It was supposed to have launched its services in the first quarter of this year.
