XOX Com Sdn Bhd a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), has been awarded the 010 prefix by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
It is the first MVNO in Malaysia to be awarded the 010 prefix.
“It’s a milestone for us at XOX as we have been working very hard for the past two and a half years to finally be awarded the 010 prefix, which we feel is very much equivalent to a national asset,” said managing director and chief executive officer Ng Kok Heng.
An MVNO is a company that offers mobile services such as voice calls and text messaging without its own telecommunication infrastructure – it rides on an existing mobile operator’s infrastructure.
Both MVNO and mobile operator benefit from such a tie-up. The MVNO will not be burdened with the high start-up cost, while the operators are able to sell bulks of air time to the MVNOs.
The company did not reveal the mobile operator it is working with.
So far, the country’s existing MVNOs like Merchantrade, Tune Talk and REDtone are riding on Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd’s infrastructure.
