SUBANG JAYA: Mobile telco giant Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd signed an agreement to lease its mobile infrastructure to up-and-comer XOX Com Sdn Bhd yesterday, continuing its trend of marketing to niche segments through its partners.
"We lead in that way," said Celcom chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly. "We are brave enough to say, if we can't win (certain segments) alone, then let's bring in a few friends and win them all together."
In this case, the market segment in question is Malaysia's Chinese community.
XOX, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), is the fourth of its kind in Malaysia and follows Merchantrade, REDtone and Tune Talk in piggy-backing on Celcom's network. XOX will be using the prefix 010 for its subscribers.
Whereas Merchantrade specifically targets the foreign Indian workers market in Malaysia and REDtone, the Chinese enterprise market, XOX is aiming to establish its presence in the Chinese commuity, hoping to subscribe 500,000 users in the next two to three years.
XOX CEO Ng Kok Heng told The Edge Financial Daily that his company stands apart from the other MVNOs that have recently come online in that XOX would offer "converged services': In addition, XOX would also provide service in the Chinese language as well as mobile services such as a social networking site.
